Ricky has been an active member in Project Coach for four years. He utilizes the communication, teamwork, and leadership skills that he’s learned in PC as captain of his high school’s baseball team and hopes to leverage the support that Project Coach has provided him to get to college for his next big adventure.
PC: What are you doing now?
Ricky: Currently I’m a senior at Central High School working as a blue shirt [youth coach] in Project Coach. I play baseball in the spring and I used to wrestle for my high school.
PC: Tell us a highlight memory from your time with Project Coach.
Ricky: My freshman year of high school was my first time working at Project Coach, and I was really shy because I barely knew anyone here. I got invited to a “Project Fit” [gym training at Smith College] on Saturday, which is a day dedicated to the coaches where we play games with each other and bond as a team. My first time going to Project Fit was amazing and a memory I won’t forget! They treated me like I was always at Project Coach and I had a blast because the amount of people that went and all had fun!
PC: How did Project Coach impact who you are now, and what you're doing in your life?
Ricky: Project Coach took a big role in my life currently because of all the positive things involved with the program. We help the North End community [in Springfield] in many ways to ensure kids have a safe and enjoyable environment to go to on Thursdays and Fridays. All this positivity made me who I am today. I gained leadership experience and learned how to speak out about a topic. I have gained confidence in myself and others through Project Coach.
PC: Team is a big part of life in Project Coach. Who’s on your team in your current life & work?
Ricky: My family is a big support in my life currently, but also another big supporter in my life is Project Coach. There is always someone there willing to help me with my problems and willing to go the long run with me because they believe in me.
PC: What big idea, project, adventure has your attention? What’s your next play?
Ricky: Currently my next play is to attend college! Another stepping stone I plan to achieve and another new chapter in my life I’m excited to explore!
